Vodafone and Visa are planning to jointly offer a mobile payments app to Android device users in Australia, sometime early next year. The Vodafone SmartPass app is presently undergoing testing on Android devices in that country.
This technology is powered by an NFC-enabled SIM card. Once this technology gains enough momentum, Vodafone plans to introduce the SmartPass app on all its NFC-supported smartphones and mobile devices as well.
It is believed that the carrier will bring the same technology to Windows Phone devices as well. The iOS platform will not be included as of now though, because the iPhone currently does not support NFC.
It remains to be seen how the carrier manages its plans and more importantly, how well this system would be accepted by the masses.
