Apple has now moved one step beyond its closest competitors, by winning an important patent that it has been vying for since the past couple of years.
The company has officially won an important micro SIM patent, receiving the Granted Patent in relation to connectors that permit easy removal and replacements of SIM cards, thereby preventing damage caused by improper insertion of the same into a mobile device.
Apple's new mini-SIM connector features a process whereby erroneous insertion results in automatic ejection of the card from its slot, via a plunger system. This clever system prevents damage that could otherwise be caused to the SIM card.
Apple has credited Zheng Gao, Steve McClure and Benjamin Rappoport as the inventor of the patent, which was first filed in the third quarter of 2010.
