We are at the start of 2013 and have already seen a sudden and rather unexpected surge in mobile OS'. The most recently announced ones are Tizen, Ubuntu and of course, the Firefox OS. RIM, which did not do much the last year, has now announced that it will be introducing its new and improved BlackBerry OS, version 10.
In the midst of all this, Android and Apple continue with their seemingly never-ending struggle for the top spot, whereas Microsoft is poised for an attack with its Windows Phone 7.8 and already much-hyped Windows Phone 8, which, we expect, is just around the corner.
I have been watching all this OS hoopla for a while now and am wondering where this is all going. There is so much confusion around, thanks to OS' of all types, shapes and sizes, each one trying to outdo the other.
Can the mobile market really handle so many operating systems? Imagine the app developer's plight - having to manipulate his or her app for a zillion mobile platforms out there!
What is your take on the issue? Will all this hectic mobile activity eventually help or hinder the industry as a whole?
